Bamyan is more than a single monument. Its World Heritage landscape brings together cliffside Buddhist remains and sites from later periods within the setting of the highland valley.
The two monumental Buddha statues were destroyed in 2001. Their niches and the surrounding archaeological landscape remain part of the site's history. A thoughtful visit starts by recognising both what survives and what has been lost.
Give yourself time to look at the landscape and learn the context of a proposed stop. Conservation work and access arrangements should be checked before a visit is confirmed.
